Working With Your Boss
You answer to the Quartermaster, much like the rest of Supply, who is commonly referred to as "QM". As for their boss, that would be the Head of Personnel, who is commonly called "HoP". The QM can watch cameras on lavaland and has also full access to Mining. However, they're usually too busy overseeing the rest of Cargo to do something like track down your carcass.
The Objective
To actually do your job, swing a pickaxe or use a drill on a section of rock to start breaking it apart. The Kinetic Accelerator, or KA for short, will also destroy a tile of rock immediately, leaving the ores behind. Drills and picks can be used on multiple tiles of rock at once, but the basic ones will be rather slow. The pick also doubles as a melee weapon, but remember that backpack space is at a premium. Thus, most miners will leave picks and drills on the station or in the mining base. Once your storage is full of ores, drag your bags and/or ore box back to the station to the Ore Redemption Machine , AKA the ORM. Drag the box next to the machine or empty your bags onto the floor to automatically have them processed into sheets. As a reminder, do NOT use the ores directly onto the ORM! You will NOT get mining points this way! Click "claim" when using the ORM to retrieve Mining Points, your reward currency to your work ID. Finally, visit the department Techfab for any new gear that science has researched (Always click "Sychronize Research" before you go looking.) and buy better stuff from the company store, I mean, Mining Rewards Vendor before going back down for more ores.
How to Do This
Problem Quirks
The following quirks will ensure that your time as a miner will be short, painful, and probably messy. Some of these can be accommodated for, but others I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I highly advise rebuilding your character or consider a different, probably safer career.
- Blind Yeah, the reasons to not take this are pretty obvious. I'm not saying that it can't be done, I'm just saying that it's virtually impossible.
- Fat-Fingered Not actually a deal-breaker as there is a mod that you can put into a KA to accommodate your digits. Alternatively, you could just stick to a Crusher-type weapon.
- Flimsy Lowers your total health by 20%. Again, not a dealbreaker, but you'll be more likely to die from taking damage.
- Monophobia While having a "mining buddy" seems like a great thing, most miners are solitary beings and for good reason. I highly advise taking a more "people-oriented" job.
- Nearsighted Another handicap that can be worked around as the techfab can make prescription meson goggles, once science has done the research. Sadly, there's no prescription version of night vision meson goggles.
- Nyctophobia While lavaland is VERY DARK, contrary to popular belief, you start with a seclite and can attach it to your KA. You can also find more seclites in the lockers and the survival dagger even includes a brighter light. This is more of a problem if you prefer crushers or lose your KA, but this can be worked around.
- Pacifist You're going into a combat zone and are unable to take hostile actions. Again, not saying it can't be done, but I strongly advise a different career path as even Security would be a better choice for you.
- Paraplegic Sometimes running really is the only option you have, and you'll be much faster if your legs work. You're welcome to try, but I highly advise looking at a different career as sometimes even mechs are a liability.
- Poor Aim Not as much of a problem as you'd think, grab a crusher and have at it.
- Reality Dissociation Syndrome There's plenty of real monsters down here, you don't need to be dealing with imaginary ones on top of that.
Helpful Quirks
You'll find some of these quirks to be quite useful during your time as a miner while others... Not so much. Ignore the haters and their cries about genetic enhancement abuse, you got ores to haul and some of these will be an advantage for you.
- Ashen Resistance Ash storms won't burn you to death, but you'll still take a lot of stamina damage. I wouldn't advise a lot of activity outside in an ash storm, much less combat, but this will buy you a lot more time to find shelter or even just survive as long as you're not near any hostiles. This is also the only job-specific quirk you can have on the station.
- Night Vision Again, contrary to popular belief, lavaland is dark. REALLY DARK. This means you're able to see just a little bit better.
- Self-Aware Not as helpful as you'd think because this mostly covers things like knives embedded in you. No, most fauna will just bludgeon or burn you to death which makes this mostly useless.
- Tough Being able to take more punishment and survive is a great thing in a place like this. While the quirk is rather expensive at 4 points, having a larger body (120% or higher sprite size.) and carrying around a Normalizer accessory like a band is practically free.
Gearing up
- (Optional) Go to medbay to be clone scanned, especially if you're new to the job. (Completely optional if you're a robot, have the DNC quirk, or just don't feel like it.)
- Your starting equipment includes a mining outfit, mining boots, survival knife, seclite, suit voucher, and a mining voucher.
- Gear up! The mining equipment locker contains sandbags, box of empty sandbags, shovel, compact pickaxe, mining radio headset, seclite, plant bag, mining satchel, automatic mining scanner, proto-kinetic accelerator (KA), optical meson scanner, bluespace shelter capsule, Landing Field Designator and a mining winter coat. Absolutely grab the automatic mining scanner, bluespace shelter capsule, a second mining satchel, and the KA unless you're going with a crusher. Now, you could be nice and use the plant bag to bring back flora samples for Hydropnics, but very few do. A shovel is needed to dig up the volcanic floor for piles of ash which are refined for glass, but you can always drop it off in the mining base if you don't need it.
- You can save some space by putting the seclite onto the KA. You can also attach the knife to your KA to function as a bayonet, but you can also put it into your boots as all boots can store a couple small items, and silently draw it back out with an Alt-Click.
- Use your suit voucher to claim either a SEVA suit (Low defense, but gives immunity to ash storms.) or an exo suit. (More defense, but gets outshined by a fully upgraded explorer suit.) If you don't want either, you could also be generous and toss the voucher into the public mining area in case a civilian wants to venture into lavaland, like the paramedic heroically trying to recover your corpse later.
- Use your voucher on a mining vending machine to select your choice of advanced mining tools, listed below.
- Pick up the silver and iron ore inside the mining shuttle airlock and toss them into the ORM, do NOT go down to lavaland with them! This will actually help out science by giving them a little kick start and let them make an RPED to upgrade parts in your ORM. Better parts means more points per ore, SO DO IT.
- Go to the Lavaland Mining Station and get an oxygen tank from Mining 'EVA'. This is also where you can pick up a mask and the beloved explorer suit, which can have its defensive values increased by putting three goliath plates each onto the body and hood.
- Pick up a GPS device from this room, change the MINE0 name to yours, and put it into a pocket, NOT a backpack! A lot of major threats can and will splatter you into a mess of limbs and gibs. Anything worn, like your outfit and backpack, will be destroyed and the only surviving items will what was in your hands and pockets. So, if you want somebody to be able to find your disembodied head, GPS goes into pocket. (This also applies if you didn't max out your suit sensors.)
- The south entrance past the lockers is the public access mining area and to the west of there contains some small bedrooms, a kitchen with a sink and microwave, bathroom, a small medical supply room, and a maintenance room to refill air tanks.
- Before you go, you may want to drag an ore box with you, but I would actually advise against it. Each mining satchel is able to hold a total of 50 ores, and each slot in explorer's webbing can also hold 50 ores of one type. Ores also don't take up much space in a backpack until you start going past 30. So, by the time you're getting full, Science should have mining tech like the Bluespace Mining Satchel (Same storage capacity as an ore box but fits in your pocket.) and KA mods researched. The ore box also hinders your maneuverability a bit, making it harder to dodge attacks from goliaths. Mobs can also destroy your ore box, and it can be annoying to get the wood needed to make another.
Smashing rocks
Go forth and find minerals! The further north, the better the ore. Activate your scanner and shove it into your bag or explorer webbing. Every once in a while it sends out a pulse that lets you see deposits in the rock a few tiles away from you. (The Advanced Mining Scanner has a much greater range.) Some ores are obviously more valuable than others and I'll list them all here:
- Metal/Iron Large white lumps: Used in constructing almost everything in the station. Rather common and not worth a lot of points, but still needed especially early in the round.
- Glass Volcanic ash: Found by digging up volcanic floor tiles with a shovel. Each tile gives 5 piles of ash, so you only need ten tiles to fill up a mining satchel or explorer webbing slot. Stupidly common and also not worth many points, but vital for station construction and making a number of items.
- Silver Light grey veins: Used most heavily by Sci and in various items. Better mining points value, but there's much better to be had.
- Gold Dark yellow lightning: Used in a lot of higher end items but a lot less valuable now that this is a post-scarcity society. Still worth some mining points.
- Diamond Cyan dust: Used in the highest tier machine parts and equipment. Worth a lot of mining points, but is pretty rare. Can also be found by butchering watchers.
- Plasma Purple shards: The reason why the station and everybody is here. Fairly common, but worth less points than you'd think for its importance.
- Uranium Green fragments: Not actually radioactive until it's been enriched. Worth a fair amount of points and used in things that require a potent power source.
- Bananium Yellow bananas: So incredibly rare that you'll probably never need to worry about it. Worth a boatload of points, though.
- Titanium Dark grey clumps: Used in heavy duty construction and highly durable objects. Worth more points than iron but less common.
- Bluespace Crystal A single blue speck: Very rare and also very valuable. Do NOT throw until you like wasting lots of points and getting teleported to a random location.
- Gibtonite Large blue crystal with a red core: This isn't a mineral, this is a potent explosive. If you hit it, retreat out of the explosion radius. (Ten tiles should be more than enough.) You can also halt the explosion by using your mining scanner on it. The explosion destroys crystalline minerals like diamond and bluespace crystals, so be careful.
- Plastic Not a mineral. If somebody's yelling at you to find this, beat them with a shovel and then politely redirect them to chemistry. Cargo can also order it from CC.
- Miners also have access to the science channel, using ".n" for "nerd". This will usually be used to ask if they have mining research "done yet", asking them to research night vision which has a stupidly low priority to them, or letting them know you're heading back with high grade stuff like diamond and bluespace crystal so it would be a good idea for them to upgrade the ORM to its limit with whatever they have right now.
- Pick up minerals by either having your mining bag in your belt slot or pockets, then just walk over the minerals. If you're dragging an ore box behind you, you'll automatically deposit minerals into the box instead of your bag.
- Once you've got enough to consider taking up juggling, return to the main station with your phat lootz. Do not deliver ore to the processing plant on the lavaland mining base, as that room is outdated and broken. Why it hasn't been replaced with a second ORM is anybody's guess. I personally blame NT's maze of red tape and pointless paperwork.
- Dump your ores onto the floor tile which is the ORM's input tile! The ORM ORM will automatically pick up and process the materials while recording the points you've earned. The Input tile is always the opposite of the output tile and is on the side closer to the mining dock. Satchels can be dumped onto the floor by double-clicking or using Z while Ore Boxes can be dragged over the same tile in order to be emptied.
- Do NOT use ores on the ORM directly! This will result in the ores being taken but NO mining points will be generated. This is a known issue, one persisting from before even I started. Why this is still like this, I really don't know.
- Click the "Claim" button on the ORM to get your points. You do not need to insert your ID and they're stored in your Account ID. A competent HoP can make a new ID with your Account ID to restore your mining points and credits.
- Check for better equipment from Cargo's Department Techfab. (Hit the Synchronize Research button before looking for things.) As long as the station has the materials and the item is researched, everything is simply available. You can get the beloved Plasma Cutter, the much better Advanced Plasma Cutter, and the all important Mining Satchel of Holding Important note that you can get the important modkits for your KA, for free, from here.
- Go to a mining equipment vendor to buy advanced equipment with the points you've gained. Your first items should be an Advanced Mining Scanner and a Survival Dagger but only AFTER replacing those Bluespace Shelter Capsules you used.
Life beyond smashing rocks
- Use your better gear to push deeper into Lavaland. Two cooldown upgrade modkits and a damage upgrade modkit in your KA will make most of the basic mobs much easier.
- If you feel robust or bored, explore some ruins and
die horriblyget amazing rewards. - If you feel VERY robust, look for Megafauna with your GPS and try to kill it for extremely valuable loot. Just be aware that failure will probably result in you getting turned into a red smear on the basalt.
Voucher equipment
You start the shift with a complimentary mining voucher, worth one free item out of a selection of four. These items, and their strengths, are:
- Survival Capsule and Explorer's Webbing: The webbing, which goes on the belt slot, allows you to carry even more mining equipment and can fit 50 ore of one type into any single space. - having a second shelter capsule is nice too.
- Resonator Kit: Comes with a resonator, and a mini extinguisher.
- Mining Drone: A little companion that helps in storing ore and hunting wildlife. Only useful once you install the sentience upgrade module which allows a ghost to control it. Comes with an upgraded industrial welding tool (Has 80u of fuel.), a welding mask and a KA modkit that allows shots to pass through the drone. ~800 pts.
- Extraction and Rescue Kit: Contains a fulton extraction pack and a beacon, which allows you to send back home minerals, items and dead miners without having to use the ferry. As a bonus, you get 30 marker beacons too.
- Crusher Kit: Contains a proto-kinetic crusher and a mini fire extinguisher. The crusher is two-handed and hard to use without getting hit, but has a chance to make fauna drop powerful trophies to upgrade it.
- Mining Conscription Kit: Contains all a single crew member needs to
become mod foodgo mining. The machine pops out a duffel bag full of basic items for one conscript - Proto-kinetic accelerator, survival knife, seclite, explorer's suit, mesons, mining scanner and satchel, gas mask, a supply radio key and a special card that adds mining access to IDs. Good for when you want to recruitmetafriendsfresh conscripts.
For Great Profit!
Mining for the sake of it can only get you so far. By mining minerals and returning them to the station you'll accrue mining points, you can then use these points to buy better and more powerful equipment and supplies from an equipment vendor. You can then in turn use these items to push further into Lavaland to mine more minerals, fight stronger wildlife and find greater treasure. Consider it all an investment.
Survival Medipens can help you in a pinch for example, or a Wormhole Jaunter can help you escape what would have been a death trap. Or using Stabilizer Serum on Legion Cores, to instantly heal yourself or save lives with it (Doesn't instaheal on station). Or you can spend it all on booze and cigars.

This comes with a inbuilt hood. It provides some protection against heat and cold, and works as decent armor with no slowdown. It is not spaceproof, but can hold a full-sized oxygen tank or other mining gear. You can also reinforce the suit and hood with up to 3 goliath plates.

Global Positioning System, GPS |
The crew monitoring console back on the station won't catch your suit sensor signal from all the way down on the planet. Having one of these on you will help others track down your body if you happen to develop a case of the dead. In addition it can be used to locate other miners (who bothered to take it) as well as "lost" signals. Megafauna, necropolis tendrils, and certain ruins emit GPS signals. Be wary. Be sure to set your name on the GPS. |
Proto-kinetic Accelerator |
A standard issue gun. The good part is that it packs a punch in a low pressure environment, is very good at digging and has infinite shots. The bad part is that it tickles in pressurized environments, has a cooldown after each shot, and has a range of three steps. Can be dual wielded on Harm Intent at the price of lower accuracy and speed. Alternatively, use other intents and switch hands after every shot to get around the accuracy reduction. KAs deal brute damage (40 standard/10 in pressurized rooms), but count as bomb damage. That way, suits like bomb suits and the RD hardsuit can negate 90% of the damage dealt. |
Survival Knife |
Use it for butchering the wildlife (hit corpse while on Harm Intent). It's as strong against mobs as a pickaxe, but you can't mine with it. You can store it in your boots to save space, but remember to alt-click the boots to draw the knife back out. Alternatively, stick it on your KA. |

Activate this in your hand, and it'll near instantly produce a beautiful shelter. Ash storms do not hurt you inside, but wildlife can break through the walls. The shelter contains a cupboard which contains a guitar (or dice) and some donk pockets. It also has a stasis bed which requires another person to use. Never leave home without one. You're issued one for free in your the mining lockers on station. |
Ore Satchel |
For carrying ore without using a mining cart, holds 50 ore nuggets. Empty it into boxes by using the satchel on them. Newbie tip: Put it in one of your pocket slots, then start dragging an ore box. Any ore you walk over will be transferred to the box. |
Ore box |
Used for carrying huge amounts of ore. While a satchel can only hold 50 nuggets, this can hold an unlimited sum. You cannot carry it, but you can drag it with you. Use your satchel on the box to empty it into the box. Even better: Drag it behind you with an ore satchel in your pocket. |

The Wildlife
Lavaland is filled with a variety of bloodthirsty alien lifeforms populating the caverns, walking just fine over the ponds and puddles of lava. Fortunately, you can fight them whilst taking minimal damage, if you have the know-how.
Useful items can be harvested from these creatures' corpses should you triumph; butcher them with a knife by attacking the corpse on Harm Intent and the goods will spill out!

Considered annoying at worst, and a free minor heal at best. These creatures unleash legion skulls, one after another at you whilst trying to keep a distance. Fortunately, each of its spawn dies in a single hit (even a single punch), and deal tickle damage to you; the legion itself can't directly hit you. It's best to go on the aggressive against these with pickaxe in hand, advancing constantly whilst picking away each of its brood. Once you've closed the gap or have it stuck in a corner, it's toast. If you fall unconscious while you're being attacked, however, you will instantly die and be turned into a Legion.

Fierce, territorial beasts capable of firing freezing beams, cold enough to inflict serious freeze burns while the watcher closes in and attacks its immobilized target. Fortunately, they don't attack unless someone comes close to them, so if you don't feel confident, you can just wait until you have a few more goliath plates, or maybe some gibtonite.

The bane of many careless miners. These monsters carry a hefty health pool, a mean wallop, and a deceptively dangerous ranged tentacle attack. They are inherently resistant to lasers, so using a KA is the best option regarding dealing with these. They move at a slow pace, stopping every couple seconds to burrow tentacles under you. These will trap you for a long duration if you stand on top of them for too long.

Huge spikes of organic matter, from the base of which crawl out countless monsters. Each Tendril only spawns one kind of monster, between legions, goliaths , imps, shamblers and watchers, every once in a while. The tendrils themselves are slightly durable, but a Kinetic Accelerator can let you easily break it with minimum risk, if you can fight through the other mobs protecting their tendrills. Once killed, it will drop its loot, shake the earth around it for a while, and then spawn a huge chasm around it, destroying anything that did not get out of the way in time. Chasms are deadly even after formation and should be avoided.

Mostly harmless and quite rare. These creatures swallow up any loose, valuable ore they can find and flee when approached by a human, smashing through even solid rock on their path of escape before burrowing into the ground. A tactic toward killing one is to throw an ore towards it, and quickly charging in to kill it while it's busy eating, but note that kinetic accelerator shots do nothing against these. Their skin is reflective, requiring a melee weapon to ensure a kill.

Extremely big and powerful creatures, that randomly spawn in lavaland. Each one of these emits a GPS Signal that can be tracked with your own GPS, to either seek or avoid them.
