So you've decided to lead one of the most important departments on the station? Well good! I hope you have a firm grasp on the basics of medical care because you are going to need it.
Medical is one of the more rewarding departments to play aboard the station, why? Well you're going to be responsible for ensuring that the dumbass who tried to fuck an Ash Drake gets brought back to their feet. As Chief Medical Officer you are expected to grasp a basic knowledge of, at least, MOST of medbay. You should know what chems your chemists need to make, how to bring a person back to life, and how to keep someone from dying. You're the top dog of medical so its your goal to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Your office and you
Unless you hop onto the shuttle, you'll usually wake up in your office with your loyal cat Runtime by your side. In your office should be a number of useful things, a couple of computers to help with monitoring the well being of the station and the medical records of the crew and your locker. Sometimes if you're lucky Nanotrasen won't skimp out and give you a private bedroom which should contain the aforementioned things. Your first step should be your locker as it contains a number of things you'll want to ensure someone doesn't break in and steal. Once you find yourself suited up and ready then it's time to begin.
Always remember to send out an announcement asking for Suit Sensors to be maxed, it makes the job of your Paramedic team actually possible when they are. Then you'll need to ensure that your Cryo tubes are activated. The process is simple, you need to find the tubes which usually reside nearby your office. Once you find them you take the nearby medical wrench and wrench down the O2 Canisters where they currently sit. Add the beakers of Cryoxadone to the tubes and ensure the AC unit is on and the target temp of it is turned down, Cryoxadone needs cold temperatures to work after-all.
Once your tubes are ready and your announcement has been made your more open to choose your path from here, Ensuring the chems you need are being made is always important, as is setting up defibs in the Operating Room.
Suit Sensors or- How to find the jackass who spaced themself
Suit Sensors and in general crew monitoring are one of the more important things that Medical Staff can do and, as the big boss of medbay, it falls on your shoulders. Always try to ensure the Suit Sensors of others and yourself are maxed. This allows anyone with a Crew Pinpointer to, well, Crew pinpoint. Medbay has Nano-med Machines strewn about, within are handheld crew monitors, often best used by Paramedics, but if you have extra it wouldn't hurt to have one on yourself. Besides the Handheld Crew Monitors, medbay usually has at least one in the lobby but your private office has one, as well as a Medical Records console.
Now you may be asking yourself, just what the heck does this even do? Well if you right click your jumpsuit and select Adjust Suit Sensors, you will see Four options, Off, Binary Vitals, Exact Vitals, and Tracking Beacon. Tracking Beacon is what you want as not only will it show anyone with a Crew Monitor your vitals but it will also allow anyone with a Crew Pinpointer to track you down if they happen to see your vitals spike to holy shit levels of bad.
Rifling through the shit: Your locker and you
Your locker is filled with shit, but how much of the shit is actually useful shit? There's a collection of clothing for you to properly drip yourself out but beyond that, there's a bunch of seemingly random items stuffed into the locker by the previous schmuck. Let me tell you though, that at least 75% of the items in your locker are useful!
The key things you'll want to keep on you are the Department's Budget, the Door Remote, the Compact Defib, the Surgical Belt, and the Advanced Hypnospray kit. But just what are these things? Well....
The Department Budgetary Card contains all the money for your department...obviously. You can add money to the card if the budget runs low or take all the money and keep your employees happy, those not getting paid are less likely to do work.
The Door Remote is useful in helping to counter the effects of a Greytide or, to lock down different parts of medbay should some horrible virus break out. It, in essence, allows you to bolt, unbolt, open, shut, or set to Emergency Access the doors in your department.
The Compact Defib and Surgical Belt go hand in hand. The Surgical Belt starts with tier 2 surgical tools and has the Smart Drapes that only the CMO can spawn with. The Compact Defib is similarly useful as, early in the shift when Defibs can't be broadly made, this can be used to bring the dead back to life.
The Advanced Hypnospray Kit is a Hypnospray kit, but advanced. It contains a number of potent, useful drugs that should be used sparingly
